What is a ranked/preferential ballot?

A ranked preferential ballot will be used to elect the next leader. Voters will cast their choice by clearly marking the order of their preference among the contestants. Their first choice will be marked as a 1, their second choice will be marked as a 2, their third choice will be marked as a 3, etc. Voters can rank as many or as few contestants as they choose – they do not have to rank all contestants.
